Buying Silver Bullion and Coins

Silver coin and bar options, including bullion coins and U.S. silver coin categories.

With the rising price of gold, some investors turn to silver as a more affordable alternative for increasing precious metal holdings.

Silver bullion coins carry an issuing government's assurance that the item is of a specific weight and purity. Examples include the American Silver Eagle and Canadian Silver Maple Leaf.

Silver bars can cost less per ounce than many coins and may be preferred by investors focused on maximizing metal weight. Coins, meanwhile, may command higher premiums but can be easier to identify and trade.

Some investors also consider pre-1965 U.S. 90% silver coins and later silver-clad coinage. The right format depends on the buyer's budget, storage plan, and preference for divisibility.
